Things I Learned from Being Ill

Amber Burke

It might sound strange, but I've learned a lot about myself and the
world by being ill.  Suddenly your priorities change and your whole
world comes into focus loud and clear.  Things that were so
important seem so trivial.  Here are the things that I've learned
from this experience:

Be present in the moment.  Enjoy the now of your life and
savor where you are. Don’t wish away the past, or worry about it.
Don’t bother worrying about the future, either. There's nothing
you can do to change or control either.  Simply live and make the
best choices you can.

Dishes and housework can wait, it's the people in your life who
can't. There will always be another dish to clean, another dust ball
to hoover up.  But you'll never get back the time with the loved
one that you got too busy to be with.

Our bodies are merely a shell of our souls. They might be the
outside wrappings, but it's what's inside that is the gift to all who
are open to it. In the same vein,
Life is too short to be modest,
self conscious, or prudish with one's body. (Believe me - you lose
any sense of modesty you have when you spend 7 months in a
hospital with male nurses changing your catheter and groups of
people examining your naked body!)

Happiness is a choice.  You choose to be happy or not.  It is as
simple as that.

Family isn't necessarily the people you are born to.  They
are those souls with whom you connect for your entire life, who
help you grow into the best version of yourself that you can be.

Kindness, courtesy, love and compassion don’t cost a thing.

Who cares if you look foolish to strangers or what they think of
you?  You’ll never see them again.

EVERYTHING happens exactly as it should, no matter how things
may seem to appear.

Life lessons aren’t always profound.  Sometimes it's the
simple common sense ones that slap you upside the head!
Wisdom comes from everywhere.  You just have to be open to
receive it.

Control freaks lie to themselves that they ever have control of
anything.

Look at theintent instead of the actions of a person. Often the
two are not the same.

Try to see the big picture. .Allow yourself to adjust to a wider
focus that enables you to see others' points of view and to
understand that there are more perspectives than just your own.

Be open to change, as it is the only constant in the universe.

No one wants to be with a whiner. A smile and a kind word can
make someone else’s day.

It's okay to fail, to falter, to lose.  Winning is great, but losing
might just be more beneficial to you in the long run .Forgiveness
is a gift to yourself.

I wouldn’t trade mental health for physical health.

No one has all of the answers.  No one even has all of the
questions.  I think God does that for His own little amusement!
