I was talking to one of the guys at work today and the conversation turn ed to the cost of living and how it is affecting different people. This fellow is a fairly big guy, in his mid- forties.
He leaned over toward me and spoke so his voice was just more than a whisper, "Don't laugh at me, but I color my mom's hair. It saves her about 45 bucks at the beauty parlor.” He straightened back up and started talking in a normal voice, “She buys the box of color and I go to her house and do it for her."
He took the time to explain about the smell of it and how he puts on the plastic gloves and massages it into her hair.
Then he said, "I wish they made those gloves bigger because sometimes I tear them up when I put my big hands in them. One time I did it without the gloves and it sure made a mess."
I smiled as he kept talking and I tried to imagine this big guy standing there, carefully putting hair color on his mother's head. To me, it was an example of love in action. People know that we love them when we go out of our way to do something that is uncomfortable or out of character.
When the break was over he walked away smiling. I'm sure he was still thinking about his mother.
It was pretty awesome. ----May 2008
